Introduction مقدمة الفصل

تركّز في هذا الفصل على تقديمِ أشكالٍ مختلفةٍ من الجملِ الاسميّةِ، ثم نتبع ذلك بإدخالِ «كان» وأخواتِها و«إنّ» وأخواتِها على الجملةِ الاسميّةِ لفهمِ التغيُّراتِ التي تطرأُ على الجملةِ من حيث الإعرابُ والمعنى.
English: This chapter focuses on presenting the different shapes of the nominal sentence, after which it introduces kāna and its sisters and inna and its sisters acting on the nominal sentence — so the student can grasp the changes they bring to the sentence in both parsing and meaning.

Topics studied الموضوعات التي ستتم دراستها

  • المبتدأ والخبر — Mubtadaʾ (the subject of a nominal sentence) and khabar (its predicate)
  • كان وأخواتها — Kāna and its sisters (the "deficient verbs")
  • كاد وأخواتها — Kāda and its sisters (the "verbs of approximation, hope, and beginning")
  • إنّ وأخواتها — Inna and its sisters (particles resembling the verb)
  • لا النافية للجنس — Generic negating lā

Learning objectives الأهداف التعليمية

  • Reading examples accurately and deriving the grammatical rules from them.
  • Recognising the components of the nominal sentence and the types of khabar.
  • Identifying the case-vowel that appears on the end of mubtadaʾ and khabar.
  • Identifying the modifiers (verbal and particle) and their effects on the nominal sentence.

How to navigate this chapter as an English-speaking learner

The single big idea in this chapter is the "modifier" (nāsikh): a word that walks in front of an existing nominal sentence and changes its case-marking. There are four families of modifier here, and they fall into two camps:

  • Verb modifiers (كان وأخواتها, كاد وأخواتها) — they raise the mubtadaʾ and lower the khabar. The mubtadaʾ stays nominative; the khabar becomes accusative.
  • Particle modifiers (إنّ وأخواتها, لا النافية للجنس) — they do the opposite: lower the mubtadaʾ to accusative and raise the khabar to nominative.

Memorise that asymmetry as a single picture and the entire chapter falls into place. After that, the work is to learn the sisters of each family and the small print of how they behave.

Mubtadaʾ and Khabar — the nominal sentence

المبتدأ والخبر
📖من الكتاب·From the Book Unit 1 · Ch 2 · Topic 1

The nominal sentence

English: The nominal sentence is one that begins with a noun. It is built from two essential pillars: the mubtadaʾ (subject) and the khabar (predicate). The mubtadaʾ is the thing we want to make a statement about; the khabar is the information we give about it. In the example "Health is a blessing", the information we give about health (the mubtadaʾ) is that it "is a blessing".

The Mubtadaʾ المبتدأ

اسمٌ مرفوعٌ يقعُ في بدايةِ الكلامِ أو يتأخّرُ، وله خبرٌ.

The Khabar الخبر

الخبرُ هو ما يُخبَرُ به عن المبتدأِ، ويكون مع المبتدأِ جملةً مفيدةً، ويُطابقُ المبتدأَ في النوعِ والعددِ، وله ثلاثةُ أنواعٍ: مفردٌ، وجملةٌ، وشبهُ جملةٍ.
English: The khabar is that which is said about the mubtadaʾ. Together with the mubtadaʾ, it forms a complete meaningful sentence. It must agree with the mubtadaʾ in gender and number. It has three types: single-word, clause, and quasi-clause.

For the English-speaking learner

The single biggest conceptual leap here is the verbless sentence. In English, a sentence needs a verb: "Health is a blessing." Arabic does not. The bare nominal sentence الصحّةُ نعمةٌ is complete without any verb — both nouns sit nominative, and the second one is the predicate of the first.

That means three things to internalise:

  • Both pillars are nominative by default. The natural state of mubtadaʾ and khabar is marfūʿ. If you see either of them in any other case, something has happened — typically a nāsikh (modifier) has been added.
  • Khabar agreement is gender and number, not case. المعلّمونَ ماهرونَ, not ماهرٌ. The case is fixed (nominative) for both; what changes is the form to match the mubtadaʾ.
  • Khabar can be a whole clause. البنتُ شعرُها طويلٌ literally reads "The girl — her hair is long." The second nominal sentence (her hair is long) is the predicate of the first noun. English-speaking learners often mis-parse this as two separate sentences; it is one sentence with a clausal khabar.

One technical point. The two-mubtadaʾ construction — a single sentence with an outer mubtadaʾ and an inner mubtadaʾ+khabar forming its predicate — is the book's example الحديقةُ أزهارُها كثيرةٌ. The grammatical machinery: the inner sentence (أزهارها كثيرة) is grammatically a clause, and the whole inner clause occupies the position of the nominative khabar of الحديقةُ. Watch examiners test this structure constantly.

There are two kinds of modifier that enter upon the nominal sentence:

  • أفعالٌ (kāna and its sisters; kāda and its sisters) — raise the mubtadaʾ and lower the khabar.
Verbs — make the mubtadaʾ nominative and the khabar accusative.
  • حروفٌ (inna and its sisters; generic lā) — lower the mubtadaʾ and raise the khabar.
Particles — make the mubtadaʾ accusative and the khabar nominative.

For the English-speaking learner

The trickiest thing about kāna for an English speaker is that it is a verb but it doesn't act like the verbs you know. It is called a fiʿl nāqiṣ ("deficient verb") because it does not denote a real action — it only connects a subject to a state. So instead of having a "subject" and "object", it has a "noun" (the subject of the underlying nominal sentence) and a "khabar" (the predicate). The vocabulary shifts to match.

Compare:

  • Without kāna: الكتابُ جديدٌ "The book is new" — mubtadaʾ nom, khabar nom.
  • With kāna: كان الكتابُ جديدًا "The book was new" — ism kāna (still nom!), khabar kāna (now acc).

Notice that جديدًا takes the accusative fatḥa; this is the visible footprint of kāna's operation. If a student forgets to put kāna's khabar in the accusative, they will lose marks on every script.

Two of the sisters are worth special attention:

  • ليس means "is not". It is the negative counterpart of the bare nominal sentence: ليس الامتحانُ صعبًا "The exam is not difficult". Notice صعبًا is accusative — laysa takes a khabar just like its other sisters.
  • ما زال / ما برح / ما فتئ / ما انفك mean "to still be" / "not to cease". These are negative-in-form but positive-in-meaning: ما زال المطرُ يسقطُ means "the rain is still falling", not "the rain has not fallen".

  2. خبرها لا بد أن يكون جملةً فعليّةً فعلُها مضارعٌ، وتكون الجملة في محل نصب خبر.
Their khabar must be a verbal clause whose verb is present-tense; the clause is in the position of accusative khabar.
  3. تقسيمها لأفعال مقاربةٍ، ورجاءٍ، وشروعٍ، مرتبطٌ بمعنى حدوث الخبر.
The division into "approximation", "hope" and "beginning" reflects the meaning attached to the event in the khabar.
  4. يُلغى عمل هذه الأفعال إذا لم يأتِ بعدها فعلٌ، وحينئذٍ تُعرب كأفعال تامّةٍ.
Their modifier-effect is cancelled if no verb follows; they then parse as ordinary "complete" verbs.
  5. Example of cancellation: بدأ أحمدُ الكلامَ — here aḥmadu is the regular subject and al-kalāma the regular direct object.

For the English-speaking learner

Two practical takeaways:

  • The khabar of kāda's family is always a verbal clause with a present-tense verb. If the verb after it is past-tense (or there's no verb at all), the modifier-effect is cancelled and the word parses as an ordinary "complete" verb.
  • The optional أن particle. In modern usage you will see both كاد ينجحُ ("he almost succeeded") and كاد أن ينجحَ — the second pattern is closer to classical usage and adds أن + subjunctive. Either is acceptable in IGCSE writing.

A semantic clarification: these are not "modal auxiliaries" in the English sense. Kāda + present verb does not mean "could/would succeed" — it means "almost succeeded" (i.e., came close but did not). The English best-fit is was on the verge of …

The rule القاعدة

  1. تدخل «إنّ» وأخواتُها على المبتدأ فتنصبه ويصير اسمَها، وتدخل على الخبر فترفعه ويصير خبرَها.
Inna and its sisters enter upon the mubtadaʾ and make it accusative (its "noun"); they enter upon the khabar and make it nominative (its "khabar").
  2. خبر «إنّ» وأخواتها يكون مفردًا أو جملةً أو شبهَ جملةٍ.
Their khabar can be single-word, clause, or quasi-clause.
  3. الخبر المفرد يُرفع، والجملة وشبه الجملة تكونان في محل رفع خبر.
A single-word khabar is overtly nominative; clausal/quasi-clausal khabar occupy the position of nominative khabar.
  4. تدخل «ما» على «إنّ» وأخواتها فتمنع عملها، وتُعرب «إنّما» حرفًا ناسخًا مُلغًى، وما بعدها يُعرب مبتدأً — عدا «ليت» فيجوز أن تعمل أو تُلغى.
The particle mā after them cancels their operation: إنّما is a cancelled modifier, and what follows is the regular mubtadaʾ — except after layta, where operating or not operating are both permitted.
    • إنّما محمدٌ رسولٌ. (mubtadaʾ nominative)
    • ليتما الطالبُ ناجحٌ. (mubtadaʾ nominative)
    • ليتما الطالبَ ناجحٌ. (ism layta accusative)
  5. كل أخوات «إنّ» حروفٌ مشبّهةٌ بالفعلِ في المعنى (تؤكّد) عدا «لكن».
All sisters of inna are "particles resembling the verb" in their semantic force (asserting/asseverating) — except lākinna, which expresses qualification.

For the English-speaking learner

The five sisters of inna are easier to learn semantically than morphologically:

  • إنَّ ≈ "verily" / "indeed". Adds emphasis. Use to open formal Arabic prose.
  • أنَّ ≈ "that". Same particle, used after a main clause: علمتُ أنّ ….
  • كأنَّ ≈ "as though". Sets up a simile.
  • لكنَّ ≈ "but". Use after a preceding clause.
  • ليتَ ≈ "would that…" — for the impossible.
  • لعلَّ ≈ "perhaps" — for the still-possible.

And the all-important case reversal: after these particles the mubtadaʾ becomes accusative and the khabar nominative. This is the opposite of what kāna does, and the source of most "case-flipping" errors among English-speaking learners. Compare:

  • الكتابُ مفيدٌ. "The book is useful." (both nom.)
  • كان الكتابُ مفيدًا. "The book was useful." (kāna: nom + acc)
  • إنَّ الكتابَ مفيدٌ. "Verily the book is useful." (inna: acc + nom)

One subtle classical detail. إنّما (inna + the redundant mā) cancels inna's case-effect: the sentence reverts to a normal mubtadaʾ + khabar both in the nominative. This is the famous Qurʾanic opener إنّما المؤمنون إخوةٌ — both nominative.

For the English-speaking learner

The two words you must say here are "absolutely no". That is the meaning of lā an-nāfiya li-l-jins. Compare:

  • لا طالبٌ في الفصلِ. "A student is not in the class." (negation of a particular)
  • لا طالبَ في الفصلِ. "There is absolutely no student in the class." (negation of the whole genus)

That single fatḥa on طالبَ — instead of the tanwīn طالبٌ — flips the meaning from "a particular student isn't here" to "no student of any kind is here". The Qurʾanic لا إلهَ إلا الله ("there is no god except God") is the textbook example.

The three forms of the noun (single, annexed, resembling-annexed) determine whether it is built or declined:

  • Single-word noun (لا سعادةَ دائمةٌ) — built on the fatḥa; you parse it as mabnī on the fatḥa in the position of accusative.
  • Annexed noun (لا طالبَ علمٍ فاشلٌ) — declined normally; you parse it as accusative with fatḥa.
  • Resembling-annexed (لا عاملًا في المصنعِ غائبٌ) — declined too, and tellingly takes tanwīn fatḥ (a tell-tale sign that the operation is fully alive).

Three operational conditions to remember (the book lists them in the table above). Any one of these breaks the rule, and the sentence reverts to a regular nominal sentence: definite noun, separation between lā and its noun, or a preposition placed in front of lā.

The letter

English: A letter is used to address a specific person. It may be formal or informal. It begins with a greeting, with an address at the start of each paragraph, and ends with a closing and a salutation. It may be hand-written (in which case both parties' addresses are included), or it may be an email (where you choose the recipient's email address).

Why these three errors keep happening

  1. الولدانِ يكتبون → يكتبانِ. The subject is dual, so the verb must end in ـانِ (the dual marker), not ـون (the plural). English speakers often default to plural because English has only one non-singular agreement.
  2. كانتِ الفراشتَيْنِ → الفراشتانِ. The noun is the ism kāna (subject), which must be nominative. Dual nominative = alif + nūn (ـانِ), not yāʾ + nūn. Confusing the two dual endings is the single most common mistake on this topic.
  3. إنّ المعلّمون واقفينَ → المعلّمينَ واقفون. After inna, the noun is accusative (sound m. plural with yāʾ) and the khabar is nominative (sound m. plural with wāw). The student has reversed them — this is the diagnostic mistake for forgetting inna's case-flip.
